Department of Energy Transition

About Us

The Department of Energy Transition is made up of people with a wealth of experience who are passionate and committed to innovating in the field of energy and chemical engineering. Our team consists of scientists, engineers and experts who have many years of experience working with industry. Thanks to the synergy between different fields of science and engineering, we are able to achieve breakthrough results and make changes that have a real impact on our daily lives.

Our role in the energy transformation of the economy and industry is to develop and implement technologies in the following areas:

Decarbonization

  • CO2 capture and management( CCS and CCU)
  • Biomass (co-firing, compacting, torrefaction)
  • Production and use of biogas and biomethane

Energy security

  • Green energy islands
  • Energy clusters
  • Off-grid installations
  • Availability of raw materials

Energy storage

  • Chemical and thermochemical energy storage
  • Heat storage based on phase change materials (PCM)
  • Hybrid energy storage systems

Power-To-X

  • Power to Liquids (PtL)
  • Power to Gas (PtG)
  • Power to Heat (PtH)

Photocatalysis

  • Gas treatment of NOx and VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
  • Scaling up and raising the TRL of photo-catalytic reactors
  • Photo-catalytic processes under elevated temperature and pressure conditions

Synthetic fuels

  • SNG
  • E-methanol
  • Green ammonia
  • Next-generation e-fuels

Hydrogen

  • Use of hydrogen in chemical syntheses
  • Separation of hydrogen from process gases (PSA method)
  • Production of hydrogen for automotive applications
  •

Our selected achievements

  • We designed and commissioned the first and currently the only pilot plant in Poland for amineCO2 capture with a capacity of 200m3/h (Location: Jaworzno and Łaziska Power Plant; TAURON Wytwarzanie S.A.).
  • We havesuccessfully designed and commissioned a demonstration installation for the removal of CO2 from waste gases with a capacity of 4,000m3/h (Location: Inowrocław; QEMETICA S.A.). Currently, the installation is included in the production line.
  • We launched a pilot installation for methanation (CO2-SNG) with a capacity of 20m3/h(Location: Łaziska Power Plant; TAURON Wytwarzanie S.A.). This is the first installation in Poland using capturedCO2 from the actual flue gases of a coal-fired power unit for SNG production.
  • We received an award in a competition for the best research work done for PKN Orlen S.A.
  • We designed and built the only installation in the country and in Europe for pressure photo-thermocatalysiswith a pressure of up to 50 bar and a temperature of 150°
  • We built a unique in the country reactor for photocatalysis in a bed of vol. 3l allowing for flow processes of up to 5m3/h.
  • We built a unique high-pressure stand for e-methanol production with the possibility of circulating unreacted products.
  • We participated in the implementation of biomass co-firing in dozens of generating units in the country.
  • We have developed a Methodological Guide:Procedures for balancing and accounting for energy produced in co-firing processes.
The Department of Energy Transition is enthusiastic about collaborating with industry and other research institutions, including foreign entities. Our priority is to build effective partnerships that support the achievement of ambitious goals in the area of energy transition
