The aim of the work under task WP.6 of the project entitled “Hybrid energy storage system using post-mining infrastructure” (HESS, No. 101112380) is to integrate three energy storage systems: an underground pumped-storage hydropower plant (PSH), a compressed gas energy storage system (CGES), and a thermal energy storage system (TES).
Logo Hess Hybrid Energy Storage SystemsWithin this stage of the project, balance calculations were carried out for the integrated HESS system, together with the selection of storage capacities and preliminary optimization of operation, taking into account:

  • operating cycle characteristics of the systems (charging and generation), including operating parameters,
  • analyses of the operating cycles of similar PSH units,
  • analyses of changes in electricity prices on the Day-Ahead Market (DAM) in 2021–2024, and the preliminary revenues assumed from price arbitrage.

In addition, changes in the share of individual revenue components were analyzed: price arbitrage, system services, and the balancing market, in the total revenues from operation of the HESS system.
In summary, the analyses carried out made it possible to preliminarily determine the optimal operating parameters and storage capacity configuration, confirming the validity of hybridizing PSH, CGES, and TES systems in post-mining infrastructure.
